Air Jordan: “AJKO” Retro I

sneaker4Back in 1985, the Air Jordan I shook up the sneaker world much like how Elvis Presley changed Rock and Roll.  In a league of white or black footwear, the largely red shoe stood out like an ugly duckling. It was even banned from the NBA because it didn’t match the jerseys. Every time Michael Jordan wore them, the league fined him $5,000. Naturally, Nike picked up the tab every time, giving them maximum exposure with this controversy.

After many colors of the all-leather Nike Air Jordan 1, a canvas version was released under a slightly different name. AJKO was added on the flap near the ankle.

Going with the canvas on a basketball shoe, the styling gives a nice nod to the history of sneakers, specifically the canvas Chuck Taylor Converse.

Now fast forward to 2010, where for the first time Nike/Jordan Brand will be releasing the very sought after Air Jordan AJKO Retro 1. First up is the original black/red/white. I have been waiting for this shoe for a very long time. The shoe is of course 90% sneaker1canvas with some leather hits on the swoosh and upper heel area. A little problem people seem to be having with this release is that it has been altered and given that vintage look. The yellowing of the mid-sole and “dusting” of the red sole has made some people look the other way.

However, recent developments proved that with a quick cleaning using baby wipes or any other shoe cleaner, the yellow can be removed very easily. This has changed minds which is good for Nike, but bad for consumers because they are rumored to have a 5000 pair release.

Along with this color, an all white canvas with red accent is also supposed to be released. They are scheduled for a March 27th release in stores, but they have been popping up all over the internet as of today and can be found with ease.

After years and years of waiting, Nike gives us two very nice options for the AJKO. Supposedly, 2010 is going to be a fantastic year for the Jordan Brand and their army of new retros.

The AJKO’s are surely a nice way to start off 2010.
