It was a rough weekend for the Yankees on and off the field. On the field, the Red Sox went into Yankee Stadium and swept the Yankees. Off the field, Jorge Posada is becoming a major problem. The 39 year old is having a terrible season batting only .165, and asked out of the line up in Saturday night’s game in which the Yankees lost 6-0.
Posada claimed he was having back soreness from fielding grounders, but most felt he asked out of the lineup because manager Joe Girardi dropped him to 9th in the order. Making the story more interesting is Girardi and GM Brian Cashman made no mention of the injury. Additionally, the Yankees were looking into disciplining Posada for his actions.
Posada apologized to Girardi and said “he had a bad day”. He also confirmed that he used his back as an excuse and could have played, making all the skeptics correct.
It is sad to this situation with Posada come to this. Posada has been a great Yankee, but his time is coming to an end. His relationship with the Yankees is becoming very ugly, and I would not be surprised if Posada’s Yankee career was over before the season ends. He is in the last year of his contract, and the Yankees are financially secure enough to cut ties with him. It will be interesting to see where this story goes the next few weeks if Posada continues to struggle.
